From Kirkby Kid to Drama School
Picture little Tony Maudsley, four years old, freshly moved to Kirkby and already stage-struck. He even bashed out the scaffold’s “Lily the Pink” on the organ as a nipper – a story an old schoolmate dug up years later.
After Ruffwood Comprehensive and a bit of gallivanting, he got serious at the Royal Welsh College of Music & Drama, graduating in 1994. He’s since said reading struggles could’ve scuppered the whole dream. Luckily, they didn’t.

The Role That Changed His Destiny
Bit parts came first — even a blink-and-you-miss-it Rovers Return drinker on Corrie in 1991. Then, bang.
Grokipedia reminds us that in 1998 he played Stefan Kiszko in A Life for a Life, the gut-punching true tale of a wrongly jailed man. Critics adored it, and he walked off with the Royal Television Society’s Best Network Newcomer award plus a Best Actor nod.
Mr Everywhere
Tony’s CV reads like a telly bingo card. He was a carriage driver, Van Ripper in Tim Burton’s Sleepy Hollow, a taxi driver in The Nine Lives of Tomas Katz, pompous Joseph Sedley in Vanity Fair, and the motion-captured giant Grawp in Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix.
On the box? Queer as Folk, In a Land of Plenty, A Place of Execution, Doc Martin, The Bill, New Tricks, Emmerdale, Edge of Heaven and Blandings, as the pigman. Phew.

Benidorm and That Hairdresser
Then 2011 happened, and a star was born. Wikipedia points out he joined Benidorm in series four as outrageous stylist Kenneth Du Beke at the Blow ‘n’ Go salon, clocking up 52 episodes before the curtain fell in 2018.
Camp, loud, and gloriously rude — Kenneth was everyone’s favourite. He was a riot too as jobseeker Graham in The Job Lot and, earlier, as hopeless bingo dogsbody Martin in Eyes Down.
Welcome to Weatherfield
In 2020, he ditched the Spanish sun for the cobbles, joining Coronation Street as soft-hearted undertaker George Shuttleworth, son of the late Archie.
Cue tonnes of drama: ding-dongs with sister Glenda, a romance with Eileen Grimshaw, and that creepy Theo Silverton plot tormenting Todd Grimshaw.
By November 2025, he’d notched over 430 appearances and even warned fans to “be afraid” of a steely new arrival. When he reunited with his Benidorm besties Siobhan Finneran and Adam Gillen in September 2025, fans went feral for a comeback.

Born for the Stage
Our Tony loves a stage, too. He sashayed through Hairspray as sassy Edna Turnblad, then did a whopping 250 shows as Kenneth in Benidorm Live.
Panto-wise, he’s a legend — Dame Trott in Jack and the Beanstalk at Nottingham, the Genie in Swansea’s Aladdin, and Kenneth the Cabin Boy in Peter Pan at the Liverpool Empire.
His serious work runs deep too: Early One Morning, Dogs Barking, A Day in Dull Armour at the Royal Court, and The Anniversary with the great Sheila Hancock. In 20,20 he was drag queen Mickey-Joe in Our Lady of Blundellsands, sadly cut short by Covid.
The Cause He Truly Cares About
One role meant the world to him. He played JJ, a bloke hiding the fact he can’t read, in the literacy drama Secrets and Words. He told the BBC precisely why it hit home:
“For people with literacy problems, the biggest initial fear they have is facing the world and talking about it. Society needs to make that a whole lot easier for them.”
