This is what happened: Tom Cruise received an honorary Oscar Award, and let’s be real – he has deserved it for years. He’s 63 now, has been making movies since 1981, and this is his first Oscar. Mental.
The ceremony happened on November 16th at the Ray Dolby Ballroom in LA. Everyone who’s anyone turned up – Leonardo DiCaprio, Jennifer Lopez, and Ariana Grande. But let’s be real, they were all there for one person.
Four Nominations, Zero Wins
What most people are scratching their heads about is, look. Cruise is a four-time nominee for an Oscar. He received best actor nominations for “Born on the Fourth of July” and “Jerry Maguire”. And then there was a Best Supporting Actor nomination for “Magnolia”.
His latest was in 2022, when he produced “Top Gun: Maverick”. Lost every single time.
Why has Tom Cruise never won an Oscar the regular way? Honestly, nobody knows. Some say bad timing. Others believe the Academy just doesn’t care about action stars. For whatever reason, Sunday night finally gave him his moment.

What Actually Happened
It was Mexican director Alejandro González Iñárritu who delivered the award to Cruise. The two of them are making a movie that comes out in October 2026. Iñárritu made a joke during his presentation – he said trying to sum up Cruise’s 45-year career in four minutes was “a mission impossible”. The room laughed. Of course they did.
But Cruise got up and made a statement that resonated with people: “Making films is not what I do; it’s who I am.” He talked about being a kid, about walking into cinemas. He’d work whatever jobs he could just to get enough money for a ticket. Once inside, he’d watch that beam of light cutting through the darkness, hitting the screen. That’s when the world got bigger for him. That’s when he knew.

Not Everyone’s Chuffed About It
Right, so here’s where it gets interesting. Not everyone’s celebrating. Some fans online called it a “participation trophy”. A bit harsh, but there you go. One person said they hoped Cruise got “orange slices” afterwards, like kids at football practice.
The argument goes like this – if he couldn’t win a proper Oscar after four nominations, maybe he didn’t deserve one at all. But plenty of others reckon he’s been robbed for years, and this was long overdue.
What Is an Honorary Oscar Anyway?
What is an honorary Oscar, you ask? It’s basically the Academy saying, “You’ve done brilliant work over your entire career, and we want to recognise that.” It’s different from the competitive awards you see on telly during the big ceremony. These get handed out at a separate event called the Governors’ Awards.
Past winners include Sidney Poitier and Sophia Loren. So yeah, it’s proper prestigious, even if some people online are taking the mickey.

The Stunt Question
Something people don’t mention about Cruise: he does his own stunts. All of them. He has scaled the Burj Khalifa, dangled from planes and broken bones attempting motorbike jumps. In his address, he vowed to continue supporting the stunt community and filmmaking “hopefully without too many more broken bones.”
That got a massive reaction. Steven Spielberg was sitting near him, and you could tell he was properly moved by the whole thing. Spielberg has directed Cruise in “Minority Report” and “War of the Worlds”. He told Cruise, years ago, that Cruise had “saved Hollywood” by working tirelessly to get people back into cinemas after Covid shut everything down.
The Speech Nobody Expected
Cruise’s acceptance speech wasn’t what you’d typically hear at these things. He talked about how films bring people together. It doesn’t matter where you’re from or what language you speak – when you’re sat in that darkened theatre, you laugh together, feel together, and hope together.
He thanked the stunt teams, the studios, and the storytellers. Then he asked everyone he’d worked with to stand up. Half the room got to their feet. That’s when you realise how many films this bloke’s actually made.

The Money Side of Things
Here’s a mad fact: fourteen of Cruise’s films have made over $100 million at the box office in the US alone. That’s not counting worldwide earnings. He’s been the last proper movie star for years now. Never done telly. Refuses to let his big films go straight to streaming. He believes films should be seen in cinemas, on massive screens, with crowds of people.
The Academy’s president even mentioned this in her opening remarks. She talked about Hollywood as a “community that protects human authorship” – a dig at AI threatening people’s jobs. Cruise represents that old-school approach where humans make art for humans to enjoy together.
Could He Win a Proper Oscar Now?
Funny thing – Henry Fonda and Paul Newman both won competitive Oscars the year after getting their honorary ones. Newman was actually Cruise’s co-star in “The Colour of Money.“ So there’s precedent.
With Iñárritu directing his next film and Iñárritu’s track record of getting actors Oscar wins, it’s not impossible. Spielberg reckons Cruise has still got it. After watching the ceremony, Spielberg told reporters Cruise was as good as ever.
The Other Winners
Tom Cruise’s honorary Oscar wasn’t the only one handed out that night. Debbie Allen and Wynn Thomas also got honorary awards. Dolly Parton received the Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award but couldn’t attend because of a medical procedure. She sent a pre-recorded message instead.
Wynn Thomas’s acceptance speech was brilliant. He talked about his mum and grandmother, instilling determination in him that never left. He’s the first Black production designer to really make his mark, working on films like “Do the Right Thing” and “Hidden Figures”.

What Does This All Mean
The room gave Cruise a standing ovation. It went on for ages. People were genuinely moved. Whether you think he deserved a competitive Oscar years ago or believe this honorary one is just right, nobody can deny what he’s done for cinema.
He’s made films that people remember. Films that brought audiences back to theatres when everyone said streaming would kill cinemas. Films where he risked his life doing stunts that would make most insurance companies have a breakdown.
At 63, he’s still working. Still jumping off things. Still refusing to take the easy route. That’s worth something, isn’t it?

Looking Forward
Tom Cruise receives an honorary Oscar Award, and maybe that’s not the end of the story. Maybe Fonda and Newman’s path is his path too. Maybe Iñárritu’s film gives him that competitive win he’s been chasing since 1990.
Or maybe this is enough. Maybe after 45 years, having the Academy finally say, “You’ve done good,” is what matters. He told the room that the cinema opened his eyes as a kid, and he’s been following that beam of light ever since.
That’s not a bad way to spend a life, is it?
The bloke’s made over forty films. He’s still got more coming. And now he’s finally got his Oscar sitting on a shelf somewhere. Whether it came the traditional way or not, it’s there. And honestly, after everything he’s done for films, it’s about bloody time too.
