My mum’s watched Erin Brockovich about fifteen times. Every time it’s on ITV2, she’ll sit through it again. Never gets bored. “That bit where she tells off the lawyer? Brilliant.” She’s got a point, though. Roberts was phenomenal, and the Erin Brockovich cast around her matched that energy.

Finney played Ed Masry, the lawyer who hires Erin after she loses her car accident case. He’s grumpy and rumpled and doesn’t want her there at first. Then she proves herself, and they become proper mates.
Got nominated for Best Supporting Actor. The Oscar went to Benicio del Toro. Doesn’t matter because his performance was class. The warmth between him and Roberts carried the whole film. Not romantic, just respect and friendship.
Real Ed Masry died in 2005. He and Erin stayed close after the Erin Brockovich case settled for $333 million in 1996.
Aaron Eckhart Played George the Biker
Aaron Eckhart was George, the motorbike-riding neighbour. Starts annoying Erin by revving his engine at night. Then he becomes her boyfriend and basically raises her three kids whilst she’s investigating PG&E.
A bit convenient, maybe. A bit too perfect. But Eckhart sold it. George wasn’t just there to look good. He actually showed what gets sacrificed when you’re fighting corporations. Relationships suffer, kids miss their mum, and normal life goes out the window.

Marg Helgenberger as Donna Started Everything
Marg Helgenberger played Donna Jensen. One of the Hinkley residents whose medical files got mixed up with property records. Her family was sick, her husband had cancer, and PG&E kept sending free doctors “because of the chromium”.
That chromium comment triggered Erin’s investigation. She realised PG&E was poisoning Hinkley’s water with hexavalent chromium and covering it up.
Helgenberger’s performance gave the Erin Brockovich real story vs movie its emotional punch. These weren’t numbers on a spreadsheet. Real families, real illnesses, real corporate lies.
Mimi Kennedy in Erin Brockovich and the Other Residents
Mimi Kennedy, in Erin Brockovich, played another Hinkley resident. Cherry Jones was Pamela Duncan, too, in different bits. The residents made you care. Tumours, miscarriages, and constant nosebleeds in kids. PG&E knew since 1965 that its plant was contaminating groundwater and did nothing.
These supporting roles mattered because they showed why Erin wouldn’t quit. Not about fame. About justice for people who’d been lied to and poisoned.
George and the Three Kids
Kids were Scotty Leavenworth as Matthew, Gemmenne de la Peña as Katie, and Emily and Julie Marks as baby Beth. The film showed Erin struggling proper hard. Bank account with $74, babysitters who disappear, guilt about working late.
That’s what worked. Erin wasn’t a superhero. Twice divorced, three kids, no money, no college degree, wearing clothes that made office women sneer at her. But she refused to give up.

Real Erin Brockovich Ellis has a cameo as a waitress called Julia. Roberts sits in a diner; the waitress comes over, and they chat briefly. Easy to miss but a nice touch.

Romance got toned down a bit. But the investigation, PG&E’s cover-up, Erin’s relationships with residents, and her dynamic with Ed? All happened.
Erin Brockovich case took three years. PG&E paid $333 million to 634 people in Hinkley. Erin got a $2 million bonus from the law firm. Sorted her money problems but created new ones. Everyone knew her story, wanted something from her, and expected her to be the film version.
Why It Works
Erin Brockovich cast had chemistry. Roberts and Finney bounced off each other naturally. Eckhart added warmth. Residents made you angry at PG&E.
Soderbergh kept it moving, with no boring legal waffle. Knew when to focus on Erin’s personal life and when to hammer the case details. Thomas Newman’s music added emotion without overdoing it.
Susannah Grant’s script balanced laughs with serious stuff. Erin swears constantly, dresses provocatively because she wants to, and says inappropriate things. Film doesn’t apologise for her. She’s abrasive and loud but gets results.

Still Relevant Now
Twenty-five years on, the film holds up because nothing’s changed. Corporate negligence, environmental disasters, and communities getting lied to. Still happening everywhere.
Flint, Michigan, water crisis. Contamination across America. Worldwide problems. Erin’s still fighting, and the film introduced millions to her story who’d never heard about Hinkley otherwise.
Roberts got $20 million and an Oscar. Erin got something bigger. Her story told truthfully, justice for suffering families, and inspiration for loads of people to stand up to corporations.
